In December 1928, a member of Kibbutz Beit Alfa informed archaeologist Eleazar Sukenik about the discovery of an ornate mosaic floor in the heart of the fields of the nearby Kibbutz Hefziba. Sukenik investigated and soon unveiled to the world an astonishing mosaic showcasing a previously unknown form of Jewish art: the Zodiac Wheel.

Here, at the foot of the northern slope of Mount Gilboa, an area rich in biblical tales and famous battles—from Gideon’s test for his warriors to the tragic end of King Saul in his battle against the Philistines—stands an ancient Jewish synagogue featuring one of Israel’s most important and impressive mosaic floors.

Ceremony Venue – The Ancient Synagogue

A beautiful entrance hall leads you to the synagogue, founded in the 5th century and meticulously preserved and restored. It feels as though characters from the Talmudic era could step in at any moment. Indeed, a moving audiovisual presentation on site relives those days and the extraordinary creation of the mosaic. Could there be a more fitting backdrop for your ceremony?

The rich mosaic features animal figures alongside decorations, menorahs, and, of course, a colorful and intricately detailed Zodiac Wheel. One of the world’s most famous scenes is depicted here: the Binding of Isaac. Abraham is shown raising the small Isaac towards the altar, with a hand hovering above and the inscription “Do not send.” Undoubtedly, this is a scene that truly sparks the imagination.

How to Get There

The national park is located within Kibbutz Hefziba, on Route 669 between the Shita Junction and Beit She’an (approximately 10 minutes west of Beit She’an).
