People visit Beit She’arim not for what is on the surface, but for what lies beneath: dozens of grand burial caves carved into the rock. These were the days following the destruction of the Second Temple, when many Judeans migrated to the Galilee, including members of the Sanhedrin—the supreme Jewish council—led by the spiritual leader, Rabbi Judah the Prince. The council established its seat in Beit She’arim, where Rabbi Judah was laid to rest. Since then, many Jews from around the world sought to be buried here. Today, you can explore the depths of these mysterious, enchanting burial caves.

Ceremony Venue – The Sarcophagus Cave

The pleasant pathways through the caves and burial chambers will guide you past decorated sarcophagi and the splendid remnants of the past, all illuminated beautifully—a truly unforgettable experience, especially for the younger visitors. The caves are filled with personal and historical stories, enveloped in a mystical atmosphere. One of the highlights is the Menorah Caves, rich with decorations, reliefs, and inscriptions. Among these, the seven-branched Menorah, an ancient Jewish symbol that has become the emblem of the State of Israel, stands out prominently. The ceremonies take place deep within the caves, in a site declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, transforming this ancient city of the dead into a vibrant, emotional, and historically connected city of the living.

How to Get There

From Tel Aviv, drive on Route 4 to Fureidis Junction, then turn east onto Route 70. From there, continue to Yokne’am Junction and follow Route 722 to Shomrim Junction. Take the first left turn and continue following the signs.
